I’ve lost a lot of paid subscribers on X for my posts explaining why TikTok being owned by a China-based company is a huge privacy and national security risk for Americans. ByteDance already has a history of spying on American journalists through TikTok, for example. I was a bit surprised to see so many MAGA figures completely reverse their stance on the app, but then I learned a conservative ultra-mega donor (to political campaigns and groups) owns huge stakes in ByteDance. And he is hiring a lot of lobbyists on the right.

TikTok is Chinese spyware and should not be allowed to operate in the U.S. while the Chinese government has access to the personal information of Americans. ByteDance, TikTok’s owner, was already forced to admit it used TikTok to spy on the movements of American journalists.

ByteDance and its Chinese Communist masters had nine months to sell TikTok before the Sunday deadline. The very fact that Communist China refuses to permit its sale reveals exactly what TikTok is: a communist spy app. The Supreme Court correctly rejected TikTok’s lies and propaganda masquerading as legal arguments.

The biggest tell that ByteDance has given us on TikTok (and something that gives the game away) is that they’re refusing to divest TikTok and are instead choosing to take a multi-billion dollar bath. This did not happen when the USG pushed a forced divesture on Grindr

TikTok essentially argued today that a qualified divestment is impossible because the source code and engineering remain in China. That pretty much proves the point: as long as TikTok and ByteDance are beholden to the CCP, the national security threat is too big to ignore.
