He was arrested in Vietnam in June 2002 and was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Chinese court in February 2003 on charges of espionage and leading a terrorist organization. Since then, he has been held in a prison in Guangdong Province, during which he has suffered multiple strokes and endured prolonged solitary confinement. His family and international human rights organizations have continuously called for his release and expressed concern over his health and human rights situation.
