“Survival-threatening situation” (存立危機事態) is a legal term established in 2015. The SDF can be authorized to use force if “another COUNTRY with which Japan has close ties” is under attack. (That “country” means the U.S., because the U.S. is vital to Japan’s survival) My understanding is that if Taiwan is attacked by China, the law does not apply because Taiwan is not vital to Japan’s survival and technically Japan does not recognize Taiwan as a “country.” If Japan is there, they are there to assist the U.S., not to defend Taiwan.
